Asparagus was a hugely common and popular vegetable in the early modern period. Much like today, it was served as a side vegetable for meat dishes like pies. One particularly interesting early modern cookbook included a recipe for asparagus porridge! It was also used for medicinal purposes, often used to provoke urine which was believed to cleanse the kidneys and bladder.
